The No-BS Summary: We built sf-sanjosetrain.com for Bay Area commuters who just want to catch the train, not be tracked across the web. We don't do creepy tracking, and if you're using Brave or strict adblockers, our app gracefully degrades and still works perfectly.

1. No Creepy Tracking (What We Store)

We do not use aggressive third-party cookies or fingerprinting. We primarily rely on your browser's localStorage to remember simple, essential UI preferences:

Your preferred theme (Dark Mode / Light Mode).
Your recent route swaps (e.g., from San Francisco to San Jose Diridon).
Your cookie banner consent status so we don't annoy you on every visit.

This data never leaves your device. It's stored locally and stays locally.

2. Minimal Ads & Analytics

To keep the servers running and the coffee flowing, we use lightweight, privacy-respecting analytics and essential ad banners. These services are strictly limited to measuring aggregate site performance and displaying standard, non-intrusive ads. We actively configure these tools to respect your privacy to the fullest extent possible.

3. We Respect DNT & Global Privacy Control (GPC)

If your browser is configured to send a "Do Not Track" (DNT) or Global Privacy Control (GPC) signal, our code automatically detects it and disables any optional analytics or ad scripts. We believe in your fundamental right to opt-out silently, at the browser level.

4. Brave Users & Storage Blockers

If you're using a privacy-first browser like Brave, or if you block cookies and local storage entirely, the site still works perfectly. We practice "graceful degradation." You might have to select your stations manually each time you visit, but you will never be locked out of checking the schedule.

5. Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information (CCPA/CPRA)

Under the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) and California Privacy Rights Act (CPRA), California residents have the right to opt-out of the "sale" or "sharing" of their personal information.

Here is how we comply:

We don't "sell" data. Period. We don't broker your identity to data brokers.
If you want to ensure no tracking/analytics data is shared, simply click "Essential Only" on our cookie banner when you first visit.
Alternatively, just enable the Global Privacy Control (GPC), Do Not Track (DNT) in your browser settings, or simply clear your local storage, and we will automatically treat that as a valid opt-out request and disable all non-essential scripts.
